General Forum > Purchasing via Lulu

Can people tell me what purchasing from Lulu is like? How long do the downloads stay available for once you've paid? What cards do they take?

I have been getting from Big Finish but considering the way they've started treating customer complaints (I read that Nick told a forum member to 'f*ck off') I cannot deal with a company that treats customers like that.

I know Barnaby won't get as much money if I get them from Lulu, but that is the way it will be for me now.

Lulu.com accepts PayPal, Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express for either debit, credit, or check card purchases.

I have bought all Textbook Stuff releases (in both Poetry and Horror ranges) from Lulu.com because I prefer using PayPal for online transactions. Other advantages I've found to getting Textbook Stuff audios from Lulu.com include a higher bit rate (320 kbps) and they are available for purchase as soon as Barnaby uploads them.

The downloads will always be available at the "My downloads" section of the account you create. I can't seem to find an FAQ mentioning this explicitly (well, I didn't really spend much time searching for it), but if you search the Lulu forums, you'll see people saying (while discussing something else) downloads of stuff they purchased over a year ago are still in their accounts. I have also tried downloading the same files more than once so there is also no limit to the number of times you can download purchased items.

Actually, it has been mentioned elsewhere that Textbook Stuff gets more from purchases of individual releases via Lulu.com than if you buy individual releases through Big Finish, so don't worry about that point.

Hope this helps.

Hi Tom.

FWIW I regularly read and post on the Big Finish forums, and I have certainly never seen Nick say 'that' to anybody! I find that generally the Big Finish customer service is pretty good. Any problem that I have had has always been resolved quickly enough.

I get my Textbook Stuff releases direct from Big Finish, but I did read a comment from Barnaby that Textbook Stuff got more from purchases via Lulu, as Anthea said in her post, plus the mp3 bit-rates are indeed higher. (Although I don't think that is really relevant for spoken word releases.) So you are actually helping Textbook Stuff Audios by buying directly from Lulu.

Maybe I will switch to Lulu myself for the next TS Horror season...

Well, to be accurate, it wasn't much of a comment but a reply from Barnaby to a question posted by a customer. :-) He also said that any sale is good, so it didn't matter to him if people got the Textbook Stuff releases via Lulu.com, iTunes or Big Finish. But the PayPal option and immediate availability of the files have won me over to Lulu. ;-)

You're welcome, Tom. If you purchase from Lulu.com, please consider leaving a rating and review so as to help boost its ranking there. And do tell your friends about Textbook Stuff. Thanks.

Hi Tom,

Of all the distributors, Lulu gives us the best deal. Also, our titles will always be available first from Lulu because once it's uploaded, all I have to do is click 'Place on sale' and it's live. With Big Finish, the process is more complicated and requires someone from Big Finish to make it go live. That can mean a delay of a couple of days up to a week or more.

But the choice is yours: Lulu, Big Finish, iTunes, Play.com or whoever. Any sale is a good sale!
